The sales funnel represents the different stages in the sales process and makes them measurable both quantitatively and qualitatively. It serves to plan resources, sales forecasts, and revenue targets more targeted and efficiently.

As the term "sales funnel" suggests, it is ideally funnel-shaped – that is, many new opportunities that turn out to be a hit or miss as they go through the stages.
